But I want to make some points on the one with the American army official. I was surprised to hear that GIs are afraid of Koreans and  I do think that South Korean nationalism is irrational, emotional and problematic. I cannot really understand it myself and I get really angry when I even see some people extending it to a quasi Imperialistic level when it comes to dealing with the Korean wave spreading to other parts of Asia. Specially the young.

However, since it seems like that some of the listeners are from other countries, I was worried that you might give the impression that Koreans are just irrational and aggressive people swept away by the same old anti Americanism. There actually are many reasons for the irrational sentiment, going even back to the days before Chosun was collonized. 

American government signed a secret pact allowing Japan to collonize Korea under the condition of Japan supporting Americans in the Phillippines, turned down the Korean democratic movement several times and backed the dictators instead, didn’t do that much when the thugs gunned down the citizens in Gwangjoo. 

There were also quite a few Korean women abandoned by American soldiers who went back to the States after giving birth to children(this is one of the reasons some people of the older generation have a strong dislikes for the black) and Korean government still cannot prosecute American soldiers against their crimes in Korea because of SOFA.

And most importantly, because of Washington’s policy to keep everything stable shortly after the liberation, Koreans who fought for the independence were never given the chance to punish the sympathizers of the Japanese empire after the liberation, which lead to the tragedy of Korean politics and society we face everyday. Washington is also partly responsible for manipulating the politicians to get rid of the liberals and socialists at the first stage, Which is also the reason why many Korean equivalents of George Washington never quite got the chance to play a big role in South Korean history.(they were mostly communists or socialists) You also have to look deeper into the political mechanics to fully understand this but i will leave it here before it gets too complicated.

I agree with you guys and I am pretty sure that you guys are aware of all this, regarding your profiles. I’m very critical about the nationalism myself and I never mean to critisize you. But I just wanted to show to those who might be listening to this podcast from elsewhere that there are many historical reasons behind this irrational nationlism. I apopogize if all this sounded too self defensive.

I look forward to listening to the upcoming podcast and hope to hear you talk about the history and politics sometime, comparing it to that of the States.

This gives people like me so much insight into what Korean society is like.
